She is the daughter of the poet Marylee Post and scientist Richard F. Post she was raised alongside two of her brothers within Walnut Creek. Las Lomas High School was where she enrolled and played football. She was a student at Pomona College for a short time and then graduated at Lewis & Clark College, Oregon. Post had previously been married Stephen Knox. The couple has been together in 1982 Michael A. Ross, an actor and a writer, who has two daughters.
